Do you remember when watching sunsets felt like a big deal? A really big deal?
When you watched a sunset, you were properly you, watching a sunset. Like you'd say, right, today I'm going to go watch a sunset.
Or sometimes you'd just catch one while you were in the car, and you'd see the sunset and think, wait for me, sunset, I'm coming with you. And you'd follow it, every now and then turning to look at it. And if it was a really, truly beautiful sunset, you'd say, hey, look at that beautiful sunset!
Maybe whoever was with you wasn't even thinking about the sunset at all — but that was fine, because that sunset was yours, not theirs.
Sometimes you'd watch the sun sink right into the sea, like it was disappearing into it, while the dark — not quite dark, more like a deep, deep blue — wrapped around everything, along with the trails of planes far off in the distance, who knows where they were going, who knows how all those stories flying by near the sunset ever turned out, while you waited for your sunset to finish, drawing things in the sand, like.
