Some Christmas, years and years ago, I got the most wonderful gift: a beautiful Orange Cement Mixer.
A toy one, obviously — 70s style, since I was born in the 70s — and when you pushed it along, the big drum on the back would spin.
A bright, brilliant, gorgeous orange.
That cement mixer wasn't really a cement mixer at all — it was a very fast spaceship for my made-up games.
I had an imaginary friend called KALIUS — sometimes an alter ego, sometimes my one true protector and saviour.
He was supposed to defend me from the enemy, who was so much The Enemy that he was actually just called The Enemy.
Anyway — none of this is really relevant, but I don't remember if it was the earthquake or something else — the nursery, on Via Pietro Castellino, just before the bridge, had to close all of a sudden, overnight.
Only it wasn't closed for a few days. It was closed for a long, long time.
Like, properly closed.
And there was another problem, too.
My Wonderful Orange Cement Mixer was in there — shut in, in the dark, along with everything else.
Still, motionless, parked.
I never saw it again.
But every time I walk down that street, every time I cross that bridge on Via Pietro Castellino, I think about my wonderful, untameable orange cement mixer, and I wonder if it kept building those beautiful, absurd houses — full of windows, with a pointy roof and a door that's crooked, not quite perfect, but always open.
Wide open, actually.
